We all know how wonderful it is to be around a purring cat. If there’s anything more soothing than to be lulled to sleep or woken up by the sound of purring, I don’ t know what it is. But a cat’s purr is not only calming and relaxing: research shows that the cat’s purr has healing properties and can actually heal bones, muscles and tendons.
While we still don’t know the exact answer to this question, we do know that cats purr when they’re content and happy. They also purr when they’re frightened or stressed. In those situations, purring may be a self-soothing mechanism.
Cats begin purring when they’re only a few days old, which is thought to help the mother locate them for feeding time. This may also be why some adult cats purr when they eat.
The more scientists look at the cat’s purr, they more they seem to uncover.
In a 2006 study conducted by Fauna Communications, researchers found that the frequency of a cat’s purr is between 25 and 140 Hz. This covers the same frequencies that are therapeutic for bone growth and fracture healing, pain relief, swelling reduction, wound healing, muscle growth and repair, tendon repair, and mobility of joints. This would support the theory that purring is not just self-soothing for cats, but is actually a form of self-healing.
The researchers at Fauna Communications believe that it’s possible that evolution has provided the felines of this world with a natural healing mechanism for bones and other organs. From the Fauna Communications website:
“Being able to produce frequencies that have been proven to improve healing time, strength and mobility could explain the purr’s natural selection. In the wild when food is plentiful, the felids are relatively sedentary. They will spend a large portion of the day and night lounging in trees or on the ground. Consistent exercise is one of the greatest contributors to bone, (Karlsson et al, 2001), and muscle (Roth et al, 2000; Tracy et al 1999), and tendon and ligament strength (Simoson et al, 1995; Tipton et al 1975). If a cat’s exercise is sporadic, it would be advantageous for them to stimulate bone growth while at rest. As well, following injury, immediate exercise can rebreak one and re-tear healing muscle and tendon (Montgomery, 1989). Inactivity decreases the strength of muscles (Tipton et al, 1975). Therefore, having an internal vibrational therapeutic system to stimulate healing would be advantageous, and would also reduce edema and provide a measure of pain relief during the healing process. “

There are a number of studies that show that cats are good for our health. A 2008 study at the University of Minnesota showed that cat owners have a 40% reduced risk of heart attacks. Other studies have shown that just petting a cat can lower your blood pressure.
There are numerous reports from cat parents recovering from surgery or injury of cats insisting on laying on or near the area of the human’s body that needs healing. So I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to think that they don’t just do this because they love us or are worried about us, but that there’s actually a tangible physical benefit when they literally purr us back to health.
I’ve always believed that animals, and cats in particular, are healers. Isn’t it nice to know that just listening to our cats purr is not only good for our soul, but also good for our body?
And just in case your own cats are too busy chasing toys or watching birds right now, here’s a video of a cat with a seriously strong purr to tide you over until your own kitties can get back on the job.

The KONG dog toy is a great classic. It’s a rubber toy with an unusual bounce that can last during your pup’s long chewing sessions. Dogs love when their owners shove treats or peanut butter inside, and pup parents love keeping their little ones busy for a while. Although your fur babe would NEVER complain, but treats and peanut butter alone are starting to look a bit…plain. It’s time to spice it up. Don’t be afraid to explore more exciting treat options. Taking a peek into your kitchen cabinets and the fridge opens a world of possibilities and finally get rid of some of those leftovers!
Stuffing KONGs are a great way to challenge your pup mentally, keep them busy physically, and reward them all at the same time. The more ingredients you stuff inside, the longer your pal will be entertained, a.k.a keep out of trouble. Before you start your own Chopped challenge: KONG edition, let’s break down the best and easiest way to pack your KONG dog toy like a multi layered dip.

Layer One: The Tantalizer is the first thing you’re going to reach for. Although it’s the first ingredient you’re stuffing, it will be the last layer in the KONG. The Tantalizer is used to entice your pup and to fill the hole to prevent anything from escaping the bottom hole. You can use anything thick and attractive to your pup. Peanut butter, cottage cheese, cream cheese, liver pate, or cheese whiz will easily keep your pal’s interest until the very end.
Layer Two: Dessert, which doesn’t always have to mean treats. Treats are good to use in this layer, but if you want to be experimental reach for something else. Try shoving a few green beans, strawberries, or Cheerios in as the second layer if you’re watching your pup’s weight. Cheese slices and peas are also fun alternatives to dog biscuits and treats!
Layer Three: The Main Course can be your pup’s normal food. Feel free to also use shredded meat, eggs, rice, or even fish. Pick one and shove it in, this will be the first layer they’re get to after the Appetizer, so make sure it’s something they really want to eat.
Layer Four: The Appetizer is the easy reward. It’s something you know your pal will be able to conquer without trouble and feel confident to continue with the other layers you’ve prepared! For appetizer it ‘s best to pick anything that can fill the hole at the bottom of your KONG. Try baby carrots, hot dogs, beef jerky, or an apple slice. Voila! You’ve just turned your KONG into a food puzzle to feed and entertain your dog.

Ready to get a little more creative? Yes, Chef! Stuffing the KONG can be fun for the humans as well as the dogs. Try different combinations and see what your pal likes best. Here are some fun and easy recipes to help you think outside of the box and to get rid of your leftovers!

Method: Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and stuff into the KONG.

A tasty way to add a little extra to your pup’s special treats, as if it needs anything else, is to use broth. Chicken and beef broths are top picks to supplement the stuffing. Make sure the hole at the bottom is well sealed with a thick paste, like peanut butter, before adding the broth. A pro tip is to place the sealed end down in a cup and fill with ingredients and/or your liquid and freeze it for a couple hours.

The fantasy of quitting your job and traveling around the world is not unique, but few people ever realize it. One man did, and he took his cat along for the ride. Richard East and his black cat Willow have been traveling together for quite some time, and he’s sharing his experience on his website, on Instagram, and in an upcoming book, Van Cat Meow: A Lost Man, A Rescue Cat, a Road Trip Like No Other (affiliate link*.)
If you missed any of the stories featured on the Conscious Cat this week, here’s a recap: on Sunday, I honored the memory of Buckley, who passed away Thanksgiving weekend 10 years ago, on Monday, I offered suggestions on how to help animals affected by the Camp Fire, on Tuesday, I introduced you to a fantastic supplement for periodontal and joint health, on Wednesday, Clea Simon shared with us that she is suffering the consequences of not featuring her tortie in her new book, on Thursday, we featured a plush tunnel and condo combination, and on Friday, I reviewed the first in Clea Simon’s new Witch Cats of Cambridge series, A Spell of Murder.
Today’s video features little Francis, the miracle kitten who was given a chance at a happy life when Ellen Carozza took him into her kitten program. I had the pleasure of being at Francis’ adoption party a couple of weeks ago. Enjoy watching this tiny but mighty little guy!
I <3 Francis! Thanks to The CAT LVT for believing in this little guy and helping him thrive.

Ingredientes
Pré aqueça o forno a 210ºC.
